In another move to keep Western culture from influencing Iranian behavior, Iran’s Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance has banned all pet & pet product advertising, including pet food.

Earlier this Summer, dogs were declared as 'unclean' by cleric Ayatollah Shirazi, based on Islamic beliefs. Such religious rulings are common and said to be based on selective interpretations. The Koran does not explicitly prohibit contact with dogs.

"Friendship with dogs is a blind imitation of the West," the Javan Daily quotes Shirazi as saying. "There are lots of people in the West who love their dogs more than their wives and children." He went on to warn of “evil outcomes".

A pet store owner said small dog sales have been increasing because they're easier to hide. Guard dogs and sheep dogs are permitted, but those found with pet dogs can be fined.

Has this ban impacted the industry, or do most companies avoid trying to navigate the murky marketing waters of these places entirely?
