Tommy R. Willard Why Are We Feeding Our Pets?

This is rather a basic question, but how many of us have stopped to consider the real answer? Are we feeding our pets to meet their basic nutritional needs, our needs, their perceived needs, or some other perceived reason? Because of all of the advertisements and marketing distractions and often misleading misinformation, we may have forgotten our original purpose of why we are feeding our pets. The specific purpose of any food should be to supply all of the known required nutrients at balanced… Continue

Lori Naipo Toby Dog - "It's A Doggie Attitude"

For the love of Toby Dog, Doggies Unlimited was created. Toby Dog loved to steal jerky from the dehydrator while it was being made. It was really funny but not really sure how healthy it was for him. He would wait for us to leave the house and he would get his front paws to the counter and remove each of the six trays from the dehydrator and spread them all over the dining room as he ate every piece. When we got home and found the mess we even noticed that he had actually turned off the dehydrat… Continue

Roya Raw Food Diet

I have been feeding my dogs Primal dog food. The nuggets for smaller dogs, Chicken, Duck, and Turkey/Anchovies. Well they say raw food is one of the better foods to feed your dog, but since I have been feeding them Primal for the past 5 months, I noticed that my Pomeranian's fur is not as shiny or lustrious as before, and my Papillon's fur is dull, thinning, and has a huge bald area on her chest and it was getting worse. They are both energetic and everything is fine other than their hair.. When… Continue

Roya Finalizing payment with companies in China

I am ordering supplies for the first time from China, and is it true they only do T/T payments. Which is basically wire transfers. They sent me all of their bank information and are now waiting for me to make my payment.. I am not used to doing business this way, I just want to know if this is normal when doing business with companies overseas. Or am I being naive? Roya Continue

Randy Strong Value Added Offers for Dog Food

I just heard about the most amazing idea for providing a value added offer for a dog food promotion. Instead of providing a coupon wouldn't it be cool to insert a shrink wrapped DVD into the package that would provide owners with insight into overall Dog Wellness. I heard of one DVD that is amazing for this and could be inserted at a fraction of the cost of an actual coupon giveaway. The DVD is a Therapeutic Canine Massage Video shot in HD great quality and can be packaged with an interstitial c… Continue

Ann Rader ethoxoquin in fish meal question

Fish meal in pet foods for dogs and cats. There's a regulation that fish meal with a specific percentage of fat must contain the preservative ethoxoquin. Exactly what percentate of fat requires the addition of ethoxoquin? Does anyone know or know where we can find that information? Thanks so much! Continue

Tommy R. Willard Unique Ingredients in Pet Foods

It always amazes me when I encounter questions or comments from either the pet food feeding public or fellow members of the pet food industry regarding unique or exotic ingredients. Ms. Danielle Park, whom I presume is not a member of the pet food community, based on her question, posted a question on the PF-Connection one Sept. 22 regarding the use of kangaroo, beaver, emu and ostrich in pet foods. Mr. Jeffrey Bond responded to Ms. Park that he thought that the idea of one of these sources migh… Continue

Debbie Phillips-Donaldson Reporting a safety problem

For any petfood manufacturer with brands being made in the US, the issue of how, when and whether to report a potential safety or quality problem just got simpler--sort of. Starting September 8, all food manufacturing facilities must now report any serious safety problem directly to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) through its new Reportable Food Registry portal. FDA says: "Registered F… Continue

Debbie Phillips-Donaldson Petfood to the rescue

At the risk of getting giddy or overconfident, the petfood industry has reason to celebrate. Most industries and business sectors around the world are still really struggling in this down economy. Sure, we're seeing signs of recovery (or at least that we've hit bottom), but it's still tough out there for most businesses and consumers. Yet among all the dismal news and financial reports, one of the most consistent bright spots is petfood. Consider big conglomerates like Nestle Purina, for exampl… Continue

Debbie Phillips-Donaldson The best regulatory approach?

Recently someone described to me what he sees as two basic regulatory approaches: 1. If it’s done right, all will be right—which seems to be the European Union (EU) model; or 2. If all turns out all right, it must have been done right—the US approach. Now, this is a very simplistic view of a very complicated issue, and it was part of a casual conversation, not an educational or information-oriented venue. But considering all the pending legislation in the US that could affect petfood--… Continue
