Petfood-Connection

Despite petfood recalls in the US, problems with chicken jerky treats from China and the still-stumbling economy -- especially in Europe -- the global petfood industry seems to keep humming along. For example, a new report from Research and Markets shows the nearly US-based petfood manufacturers (including huge multinationals like Mars and Nestle Purina) earn a total annual revenue of about US$47 billion dollars.

Even in Western Europe, with its reeling economies, petfood sales are increasing. "No crisis in the Italian pet supplies industry" proclaims a headline in online magazine Vimax.com, citing data from the 2012 ASSALCO-Zoomark report showing sales of dog and cat food grew 2.1% in 2011 and reached 1.604 million Euro (US$2.015 million), including snacks and treats. (ASSALCO is the Italian pet trade association.)

Similarly, Vimax.com also has an article saying "The French petfood market does not know the crisis," though it does not contain any data or information that really backs up that statement, other than the fact that pet ownership in France has remained fairly stable. Citing a report from Animal Distribution, the article says 25% of French families own dogs while 28% own cats.

It will be interesting to see if petfood growth continues -- or any growth happens -- this year considering the current Eurozone economic crisis. Yet growth is continuing in the US, in spite of a sluggish recovery, and most industry experts expect growth to continue to soar in so-called developing petfood regions like Latin America, Eastern Europe and Asia, especially markets like China.
What do you think? Petfood Industry will be publishing an article soon on the state of the global petfood industry. You can contribute your insights and experiences by answering two basic yet possibly profound questions:
  • What is the single biggest or best opportunity for the global petfood industry at this time?
  • What is the single biggest or most important challenge for the industry at this time -- and what should organizations in the industry do to meet that challenge?

If you'd care to address either or both questions, please respond in the comments section below. (You need to register and sign in to comment; registration to the site is free.) Thank you, in advance, for your input!

Let me start with a few remarks. In the mature to saturated markets we confuse growth with inflation. Or with the upgrading effect. But this doesn't mean that more dogs and cats are more frequently being fed industrially prepared pet food. Whereas the calarific intake represented by industrially preparedstill is not 100%.

So my question is: are we kidding ourselves?

And practice in W.Europe points out that most of the markets in the Eurozone are doing badly, sometimes with negative growth on the value-side. What in my opinion is fueling the perceived global growth? To an extent inflation in the biggest markets N.America and Europe; and obviously the Brazil and to a lesser extent the Chinese market start to show their weight. But will they continue to do so to the current extent?

I find it very hard to mention a single biggest or best opportunity for the global industry; because the global industry knows so many regional differences. But in general the single biggest opportunity our industry would have is to find an answer (collectively?) to the increasingly harsh and increasingly unrealistic dictates of grocery retail-chains.

The single biggest challenge that the industry faces - and this to me is a global phenomenon - is to find an answer to what I call the WIE question. Water, ingredients, energy; all becoming more scarce because of increased global demand. A bit of tweeking isn't going to help us anymore, however useful this is on the short term. We need serious breakthroughs if we want to be taken seriously as an industry.

Hi
Good Day from Ghana.

My name is Gilbert Darko,From Ghana.
I am the C.E.O. of Alsapup Dog Restaurant.

Alsapup is a company that produces dog food.

We have invented a recipe of dog food,
That uses local raw materials in Ghana,to produce,
making the unit production cost very low.

This dog food has some kind of attraction by the dogs.
The dogs never give up on eating it.

The nutritional value is high, and the dog owners have no choice
than to buy and buy and buy for their dogs making it very good for business.

The issue now is to involve an investor to invest an amount of
US$500,000 into the production of this food to meet international standards.

May I please indulge your capabilities into advising on how this can be achieved.

Hoping to read from you soon in considering to invest  and becoming  part of this success story.
Please reply to my E-mail at : alsapup@yahoo.com for further discussion.

                                                            Sincerely Yours
                                                            Gilbert Darko
